Here we have safety officers who ride in on all working fires, if there is a major injury or if a piece of safety equipment (helmet, air-pack, bunker gear, etc) sustains any kind of damage (see above picture) we turn it in & it is replaced.

Each FF here gets two sets of gear when they start. I have three sets. My two old set have lasted me five years, three I was driving, so they really dident get much use. But one will have to be turned in due to a five year replacement program we have.
We only get one helmet. Most ff helmets that work in the old section of towns helmets are toasted, much like Jamies or Deuce. They will use that helmet untell they promote of retire. Our guys take much pride in there helmet. It shows us who works and who rides the officers coat tail.
Ive had my leather lid for about 7 months now, I need to get a new pic up...

We only get one set of gear at a time and you wear it until its worn out...in the busier sections of the county gear will last about 3 to 5 years...the slow stations you have got guys that are still on a set of gear from 3 gear specs ago.
Everyone gets a county issued "salad bowl" helmet....personal helmets are allowed as long as they are NFPA compliant and the chief has signed an approval form allowing you to wear gear non issued by the county.
When we have yearly inspections our gear is evauluated for is cleanliness, countinuity (free from holes, rips, tears, etc), and any other thing that will inhibit the gear from being safe to the user. Our helmets wether personal or county issued also have to meet the same standard...our gear gets cleaned twice a year and at that time we also have to clean our helmet. If the helmet isnt clean in the inspectors eyes then he can remove it from service until you get it squared away....the only burnt up helmets you will see on our job is typically burn building only helmets.
I think it sucks(well the helmet part anyway...it takes alot of mantinence to up keep a leather helmet) but its the rules we gotta live by.

Looking at getting a leather lid. My chief says it has to meet osha and nfpa. Do New yorkers meet both, or just Sam Houstons? Is it just a matter of having goggles on the new yorkers or what? Any one more up on this topic please give me the low down.....thanks

My personal memorial to the Charleston 9 and the FDNY 343

Cairns 1044 with Paul Conway shield, had it since May 09'. While not quite as charred as some of you city guys, its got some character for 10 months of use in a mostly rural F.D. Prior to this I used a Bullard PX series "Salad Bowl".
